A week ago I began a new decade. I walked around on the afternoon of this day in the photos, pondering the newness ahead, or anticipating newness. Looking at the light on things with my head sideways. Like I would suddenly feel different. But I can't say I do feel different, at least not suddenly, and I think I'm glad about that. Because I am not just my age. No, I'm the kindergartener getting in trouble for standing on the table in my Wonder Woman costume, the girl who roller skated with my sister up and down the hall over and over, the new eighteen year old college freshman, the twenty-five year old grad student, and thirty year old walking downtown with my husband. Those birthdays and others blend together, and didn't they just all happen about five minutes ago? I mean, aren't we each still the different versions of ourselves in our minds? It's like our interior and exterior worlds don't necessarily always move in the same direction. Our physical selves age but we still think like our younger selves, but with a bit more wisdom. Maybe this blending is what helps us form our own unique perspective of the world? Or,,, perhaps I just haven't gotten enough sleep lately. I'm still catching up with the silly time change.

My work for GOOD MAIL DAY

For (at least) the past seven years I have had the good fortune of working with Artstream and knowing Susan Schwake. She and Lisa Solomon are curating an exhibition entitled GOOD MAIL DAY.  Contributed works will be in different media, all original, 4x6 inches in scale, and made by sixty different artists from across the globe. I'm excited to view these online, though as always, I wish I could see them in person. I've been seeing a few peeks on Instagram from other artists, and think it will be a really fun show. It's one of those that I know I'd be walking in to the gallery with an itchy wallet. These will be very collectable pieces. Show opens November 7.

And here are the works I am sending. Visually, they are similar to my sketchbook entries. I began on one piece of paper, then separated them, which was part of the concept. The titles come from songs that I was listening to while painting, and interpreted them to mesh with ideas in my recent work.

Mid-October alley walk

A mid-October alley walk in the early evening, when the light goes from gold to blue. I noticed a pinky-peach tone in the eastern sky the other night. The tone that makes me think of the winter skies here, the insides of seashells, and the frosted rim on our wedding china. Soon, when the time changes, the evening walks will be bluer, darker, or they will have to happen by four in the afternoon. Maybe today I'll try a mid-afternoon stroll with my camera.
