5.19.13

May 20, 2013

(sun) Homemade biscuits with preserves sounded good to me so we made that and fried eggs for brunch. In the garden I continued working a new path. He dug to turn up the soil and I weeded it out. He planted the tomatoes tonight, before the storms rolled in. We've been eating salads nightly this week and I don't think I will ever tire of eating greens.

(f) The first studio day of the summer. I painted a couple small pieces that I like, and was thinking about making different marks than in the previous ones. When I look at these pieces, I feel like I'm in a different place. If not geographically, then a different place in time.

(th) Last day of school family picnic in the park. If this is summer, it sneaked up quietly. The evening air was darn near perfect.

(t) KU field trip with the preschoolers. One little girl was concerned about the taxidermy animals and how they used to be alive. She kept asking if they were dead. I imagine this was a strange concept. Tonight I just listened to him, and am not sure I was much help. Eventually things calmed.

(sun) Holding the photo of him as a little boy sitting with his grandpa, my thoughts wandered, as I looked at his blonde hair, straight little nose, smile, and ears that stuck out. When we returned, he worked in the garden a bit as I unpacked. We walked to the grocery store to pick up bread and a couple things. I picked the first salad greens from our garden for supper. I was surprised at how content I felt this evening, at home. I made it through this day. I made it through this week.

(s) With the leftover buttermilk I made blueberry buttermilk pancakes for breakfast. We spent the morning and early afternoon in the garden pulling weeds and planting okra, zucchini, doll baby watermelon, and edamame seeds. Boy, did I ever need this time outside. We stopped at the tallgrass prairie preserve on the drive. We got there after hours but were able to walk the trails. It was windy but warm. The paths were wet in places and flowering plants weren't as far along as last year. I especially enjoyed pausing by the stream, listening to the water roll over the rocks as invisible birds sung overhead. Also today I finally finished a roll of film that, unbelievably, I started last summer.

(f) I moved in slow motion, fell down a rabbit hole of research, and finally found a starting point.
